# Publishing your map
Publishing makes your map available at its link. Who can then open that link depends on the map's access type, which you set on the same page — see [Making a map private](/sharing-your-map/making-a-map-private.md).

New maps are **private**. Publishing a private map does not make it publicly accessible: only its owner, its editors, and the people on its audience list can open it. Set the access type to **Public map** if you want anyone with the link to view it.

## Publish your map
1. In the navigation bar on the left, select **Publish map**.
2. Under **Map state**, select **Live**.
3. In the **Make this map live?** dialog, select **Make map live**.
The map state changes to **Live**. Under **Share this map**, you can now copy the map link, download the **QR code** and, for a public map, copy the **Embed code**.

While your locations are still processing, the **Map state** card explains that publishing will be available shortly. Wait for processing to finish, then publish.

## Unpublish your map
1. Under **Map state**, select **Draft**.
2. In the **Switch this map to draft?** dialog, select **Switch to draft**.
A draft map is visible only to you and its editors. Citizens who open the link no longer see the map.
