# Transferring map ownership

As the map's **Owner**, you can make one of its editors the new owner. You then become an **Editor** of the map.

The new owner must already be an **Editor** of the map and must have logged in to Maps at least once. To make a Viewer the owner, first change their role to **Editor** (see [Making a map private](/sharing-your-map/making-a-map-private.md)).

In the navigation bar on the left, select **Publish map** and scroll to **Members**.

Open the role dropdown beside the editor and choose **Owner**. The **Transfer map ownership** dialog opens. Only the map's Owner sees the **Owner** option.

After the transfer, you can no longer delete the map or transfer its ownership. Only the new owner can transfer ownership back to you.

Select **Yes, transfer map** to confirm. A message confirms that the person is now the owner. In **Members**, they are listed as **Owner** and you are listed as **Editor**.

The new owner receives an email telling them that you made them the owner, with a link to the map.

If the map is private and either of you has signed in to view it, you need to sign in again the next time you open the map's link.

## If the transfer does not go through

If the person has never logged in to Maps, you see an error that ends with `must sign in at least once before they can become the owner`. Ask them to log in to Maps once, then try again.

If you see `Only an existing editor can be made the owner`, the person is no longer an editor of the map, for example because someone removed them. Refresh the page and check their role in **Members**.
